Handing out money to children is a tradition of Eid. Make these felt envelopes for a charming way of gift giving. Fastened with velcro, these envelopes are adorned with 8 pointed stars.
Materials
- 8.5″ x 11″ sheets of felt, various colours
- Tacky glue
- Velcro coins
- Craft scissors
- Masking tape
- Safety pin (optional)
- Clipart
Steps
- Determine size of envelopes. Use a full sheet of felt for large envelopes; cut sheet in half for medium sized envelopes; or cut felt into thirds, widthwise, for small envelopes.
- For each piece of felt, fold 3/4″ lengthwise on both sides and glue down. To adhere the glue, press down on folds with full body weight or lay some heavy books on the folds for a few seconds.
- Fold the bottom of the felt upwards to create a pocket and secure with glue. Apply pressure till glue adheres.
- To make a rectangular outer flap, fold the top edge of the felt 3/4″ down and glue. To make a triangular outer flap, fold the two top edges inwards to get a rough outline of a triangle. For a symmetrical flap, secure in position with a safety pin while cutting out the triangle flap.
- Download and print clipart; cut out 8 pointed stars out of felt using the clipart as a template.
- Bind the two velcro rounds onto each other and stick the velcro halfway off the edge of the envelope.
- Close the envelope so the bottom round of the velcro adheres to the envelope as well. Open envelope again.
- Adhere felt star to the part of the velcro hanging halfway off the top edge. If using a large star, in addition to using the velcro, completely secure star to envelope by using glue.
- If desired, layer different shades and sizes of felt stars onto each other for pattern and contrast.
TIP: For sharply cut out stars, apply a small piece of masking tape to each of the 8 points on the star template. Stick to felt and then cut with craft scissors.
